..and if you're still curious what it's all about, here's a review of our intro to track riding program!

I'm now officially positive that a BOMO trackday is about the most fun you can have with your pants on. I can't say I was dragging a knee like [Rich] was... but i ditched my chicken strips which was my goal for my first day out there.

I did the intro-to-track-day experience. They come right over and inspect your bike, Mike noticed my chain was too tight and adjusted the rear wheel for me, lunch was provided, video tape one of your rides, all that good stuff. Spent most of the day with DucDave [Dave Michaud] who was great. He kept going a little faster and a little faster seeing if I could keep up before pushing it a little harder... or would slow down to point out a better line to take.  I never felt rushed or intimidated out there... although when the fast guys blow by you on the straightaway when you're not expecting it, that takes a little getting used to!  All the instructors were quick to answer a question or offer advice.  In general everyone there whether they were an instructor or a fellow rider made for a fun atmosphere in the garage.

So thanks to Dave, Mike, and Ox for getting me hooked. I'll be back in July.

Which is best, DOT Race or Street Tire for Track Days?

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook

This comes up time and time again on internet forums, and by customers on a daily basis at the track... "What tire should I run for track days?"  Use the information below to help make a decision that's best fit for you.

DOT Race tires have come a long way in 10 years or so... no longer are issues like "heat cycling" as much of a worry as they were in the past.  Most major brand DOT race tires today use similar basic compounds as their street brethren.  And the street "hypersport" tire segment is growing even closer to their racing tire counter parts each and every year, with increased lean angles achieved on the very same tires that come equipped on many popular sport bikes.

ContiRaceAttack R6

So what's the best choice for you?

For track day novices and junkies alike, a modern sport tire (anything from a sport touring tire to an ultra-grippy hypersport tire) will serve most riders' needs for track day use, especially if you run your track days on your street bike.  If you are seeing street miles at all, your best bet is extremely clear: get a street tire that meets your needs in terms of grip and longevity.

If you have a dedicated track bike, the choice becomes a little less obvious.  A hypersport "street" DOT tire is the tire of choice for track day junkies who aren't local club racers or chasing lap times.  Sacrificing very little in terms of grip (some street hypersport tires offer as much as 90% grip when compared to their DOT race tire counterparts), you can expect quicker warm up times, better cold weather and wet performance, and longer life.  Plus you won't need to invest in a set of tire warmers or paddock stands, a trade off many are more than happy to make.  Rolling out onto the track, you won't have to worry about waiting before your group is released, or waiting on the grid when there's a red flag... hypersport street tires benefit from extremely quick warm up times and are engineered for grip at much lower temperatures and in a wider range of operating conditions than a DOT race tire.

Tire Warmers

If you're an experienced track day rider with the discipline to take an easy first couple of laps each session... or you don't mind the added expense of stands and tire warmers... then a DOT race compound tire might be just what you're looking for to take your track riding to the next level as you start to push your limits on the track.

With the latest rubber available for street and track day enthusiasts, you really can't go wrong.  Nearly every magazine tire test rates each brand closely overall, with subtle nuances and different "feels" to the tire making up the differences and just like bike shoot outs, a different brand usually ends up on top each year as the product lines are continually developed.

In summary:

  • If you're new to track riding or run a moderate pace, any "sport tire" that you feel comfortable on (whatever you use for the street) will be more than capable of taking you safely through numerous track days.

  • If you've been riding the track for a while and are looking for that added performance, but desire a solution that will work in nearly all temperature and weather conditions, a trusted hypersport street tire from a major brand will provide performance capable of approaching expert race times.

  • If you're an expert track rider or club racer searching for added track time and desire the ultimate in grip for a DOT approved tire, and have a dedicated track bike that won't see many street miles, then a DOT race tire is the answer for you.  If you desire longevity, choose a medium or harder compound tire that will last longer.  If you're chasing lap times, choose a softer compound tire that will provide more grip while sacrificing a little longevity.

Tricky

We and our staff nearly exclusively run hypersport street tires to alleviate the need for tire warmers, stands, and added tire changes.  Sacrificing a little performance (which is growing narrower every year) to the DOT race tire, provides a trade off which significantly reduces stress and concerns throughout your track day experience, letting you focus less on whether your tires are up to temperature, and more on what we all love best... riding.

The Ultimate Riding School Coming to Loudon!

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook

Last year we were fortunate enough to be joined at Virginia International Raceway by Doug Polen, former AMA Superbike Champion, 2-time WSBK champion, and 2-time World Endurance Champion... who now spends his days traveling the country with the Polen 1-on-1 Riding School

Polen at Miller

We met Doug at Miller Motorsports Park for World Superbike Series' stop in Utah, and after talking for a bit found out that Doug and Brian Larrabure (Managing Director of the Polen 1-on-1 School) would be in Virginia around the same time we would be hosing a 3-day track event.  Follow up conversations sorted the minor details and shortly there after we found ourselves at VIR watching the guys from the 1-on-1 school unload their gleaming red Ducatis.

 polen_school

Luckily, I was fortunate enough to get to ride on-track with Doug.  I got my session with him on the South Course, a course I had never been to before.  Within 2 laps (Doug observes from behind on your first flying lap), Doug came screaming by on the main straight and in my ear I hear "Ok, so get on the brakes softer and stay on them deeper... deeper... still on the brakes... ok now you're off and on the gas..."  Then came turn 3, a very tricky turn where you come up over a hill (unloading the suspension) and dive back down in a mini-Laguna-esque corkscrew.  "Stay on the brakes over the hill as you turn in.. see... it helps settle the front so the bike can turn..."  Sure enough, a little pressure on the brakes up and over the hill as you turn left made the bike track unbelievably, and felt completlely solid.  The entire morning I'd been afraid of this section, as it really feels like you're going to get some serious air time there and the last thing you're thinking of is front brake as you're leaning the bike in!

Turn after turn, lap after lap, Doug picked very obvious weak points in my riding around this particular course.  Just the way your brain processes real time information makes worlds of difference, no matter how many times you tell yourself to do something in the pits, having his voice in your head in the very seconds approaching a particular turn or spot... is an unreal experience.

After my session (that was over far too quickly), I knew that this would be absolutely the best tools to lower my lap times at my home track in Loudon, NH.  I assumed at the time, this would never happen... what are the chances Doug and Brian would be up near us?

Fast forward to December of 2009, I receive a call from Brian and he mentions they will be up in the area to run the1-on-1 school with Sportbike Track Time at Monticello in Upstate New York, in late May.  A quick glance at our track calendar shows a two day event at NHMS on May 25-26th, and Brian says "so we'll see you there?"

I could barely contain my excitement at the opportunity to have Doug show me the finer points around my home track, a place I've ridden for nearly 10 years, and know I still have vast areas for improvement.

It would be an understatement to say we're extremely happy to have Doug and his 1-on-1 Rider's School joining Boston Moto at New Hampshire International Speedway on May 25th and 26th.  If you have been waiting for the opportunity of a lifetime to get real-time instruction around our own Loudon circuit, now is the time.

Bear in mind the 1-on-1 School is limited to 6 riders per day, so a total of only 12 spots are available for these two days.
